I took an idea from Kelly Hanson and adapted for my own classroom. She mentioned that she and her mentor teacher felt that respect is a word that gets thrown around too often and that it is something that is earned and not demanded. I had this discussion with my students and agreed that until respect is mutually earned, we all need to be decent to each other. I then asked my students what it would look like for me to be decent to them and what it would look like for them to be decent to me and each other. I wrote these guidelines down and had the kids sign the paper agreeing that they would follow these guidelines.
(I'm going to try to get an image up asap!
