Learning Centers Lesson Plan

2nd year high school Spanish

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students will be given time to peer edit each other's skits. They will also practice using formal commands with the verbs they have learned in this unit. They will also learn different cultural aspects of Latin American countries, including bartering and size differences.

Standards used:
State Standard 1.1 Interpersonal Communication: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
State Standard 1.2 Interpretive Communication:
Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics.
State Standard 2.1
Practices and Perspectives: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied.
State Standard 4.2
Comparing Cultures: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.

Context & Rationale: Students will have been working on the rough drafts of their skits, so one learning center is dedicated to peer editing those. An important part of this unit is understanding how to say and understand formal commands, and so students will be practicing forming these with verbs from the unit. In Latin American countries, bartering is an important cultural practice that is not very common in the United States, so students will learn about this in the third learning center.

Grouping: There will be three groups of students for the three learning centers. In order to accomplish this, have the students divide up according to their skit groups: 3 people are in a skit group, so each person from the group goes to a different learning center.

Materials: flashcards with verbs on them (see unit web for a list of verbs), pictures with scenarios from the unit (in a market, in a clothing store, etc.)

Learning Center 1 (15 minutes)
Students will have brought a copy of a rough draft of their skit. They will peer edit each other's skits, giving not only corrections but also suggestions. Students can exchange with 2-3 other people, time permitting.

Learning Center 2 (15 minutes)
Teacher will have prepared flashcards with the verbs from this unit (see unit web). In pairs, students practice saying the formal commands using the flash cards. In order to contextualize the activity, the teacher gives pictures of scenarios (in a street market, in a clothing store, etc.). Students can also hold up the picture and practice saying the phrases that they learned from each section. (Example: with a picture of a store, the student could say "¿Dónde están los probadores?").

Learning Center 3 (15 minutes)
The teacher will be helping with this center. The teacher will explain to the students how to bargain in Latin American countries ("consejos para regatear" p. 236). Students can practice using phrases from the chapter relating to bargaining. Teacher can also explain how sizes are different in other countries (chart on p. 233). Student could figure out what their sizes would be if they were shopping in a Latin American country (good for them to know for their skit!).
