Learning Centers Lesson Plan

Learning Centers: Target Language Culture

Level: Spanish 1, grades 9-12

Description: This lesson incorporates four learning stations. Each one will focus on a different area of language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The stations will incorporate the vocabulary and grammar from the unit.

Rationale: The goal of this lesson is to target each of the four areas of language. The activities at each station are carefully chosen so as to incorporate the vocabulary, grammar, and content that are the focus of the unit. Students would care about this lesson because they can work in groups, and because the overall lesson caters to students with strengths in each area of language. Also, the movie trailer and the written summary are interesting, and the writing assignment allows students to be creative and imaginative.

Objective: At the end of this lesson, students will be able to speak, listen, read, and write using some of the vocabulary and grammar structures from the unit. Also, they will learn more about culture in Spanish-speaking countries.

Popsicle sticks with a student's name written on each one
Four stations set up with:
a. Speaking: worksheets with questions and a pen or pencil to answer
b. Listening: laptop with video clip, printed directions, worksheets with questions about the clip
c. Reading: printed directions, copies of the movie summary, and worksheets with questions about the summary
d. Writing: printed directions, paper

1. Divide students into four groups of six, and have one group start at each station. To divide the students, the teacher will pick Popsicle sticks with students' names. The first six names chosen will start at one station, the next six at the next station, until each student is at a station. (8 minutes)

2. Students will spend 12 minutes at each station. The station activities will be as follows:

a. Speaking: The teacher will conduct a speaking activity with the group and informally assess how each student uses the vocabulary and grammar from the unit. The speaking activity will focus on using the preterit tense. The teacher will model a few questions with various students such as “¿que hiciste ayer?” (What did you do yesterday?) Or “¿que comiste ayer?” (What did you eat yesterday?) Any -ir or -er verbs will work. Then students will be given a worksheet that asks them questions (that will require them to use the preterit) about the other students. They will have to ask the other students and write down the answers to the questions in Spanish.

b. Listening: Students will watch a short commercial, found here, and answer questions about it to assess their listening skills. A laptop with the clip already set will be at the station, with directions for students to start the clip and handouts with questions. Students can replay the clip if they need to until their time at this station is up.

c. Reading: Students will read a short summary of a movie, and then answer a few brief questions to assess their reading skills. Directions and worksheets will be at the station.

d. Writing: Students will be asked to write a short story about the last movie they went to see. They can describe where they went and what they saw using at least five vocab words and five preterit verbs. Directions and paper for the story will be at the station.

3. After the last station, the teacher will collect any work done at the stations. (4 minutes)
