Interactive Writing Activities

Here’s a way to make Writing in the TL more interactive and practice vocabulary and grammar structures:

Progressive Writes: Put students into groups of 4-5 students. Each person should have a piece of paper for themselves. When told to begin, students should begin writing a story. When time is called, at about 45 seconds to 1 minute, have the students pass their paper to another group member. Each student takes their new story, reads what is there so far, and continues writing the new story for 1 minute. The students then pass the stories again, and the process continues. Students will probably be able to write for 15-20 minutes, but time can easily be adjusted as needed. Have the groups share their stories with each other or the class. The trick: Student #2 will change the story that Student #1 started—often the stories seem crazy or bizarre. This just adds to the excitement and interaction of the activity! - leonar77 leonar77

FAQs from FLTEACH for Using Journals

100 Essay & Journal Topics (by Ken Stewart) - Many are aligned to AP themes

Writing Journals- These are useful for students who have already had some experience in the TL. (otherwise they have too little language to use them effectively) I like to use them at least 2x a week, and have the students mark their progress by saving their sheets and having them look back. They can look back and correct for grammar, count words to see what progress they have made there, etc. - cartierm cartierm

Writing Formats

Print-Cut-Fold Templates - These are good examples of different kinds of books you can have students make to engage students in "publishing" their writing in a variety of formats. Download the zipped Print-Cut-Fold templates, then open the folder. When the individual files become visible, first look at the PDF called Print-Cut-Fold Activities (down toward the bottom) for a brief description of each project. This is a good example of how teachers can use common software applications to accomplish basic paper-based projects. You can save each file onto your hard drive for future use. One nice thing about this "handout packet" is that it includes templates AND samples so you can see how students might use each one. Obviously, they will have to be adapted for use in a FL classroom.
